OUR future
Constance Lake First Nation is working to uphold our aboriginal and treaty rights and decolonize. We are seeking to heal from the past and work together as one community, with one heart and one mind, and in accordance with our ancestors’ values to rebuild our Nation.
There has been recent progress by governments to finally recognize the rights of Indigenous People. The United Nation Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP), adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday September 13, 2007, was an important first step. Today, it has the support of 148 countries around the world, including Canada although the federal government has yet to formally adopt their principles into law.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission confirms that the UNDRIP should be the framework for reconciliation with Indigenous People in Canada.
In 2019, the Government of Ontario took to action to create Bill 76, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. The act requires the Government of Ontario to take all measures necessary to ensure that the laws of Ontario are consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Nation recognizes indigenous people have endured a great deal of historical injustices. For the many injustices the act accounts for; doctrines, policies, practices based on or advocating superiority of peoples or individuals on the basis of national original or racial religious ethnic or cultural differences are racist, scientifically false, legally invalid, morally condemnable and socially unjust… just to name a few. The Government of Ontario is committed to taking appropriate measures, including legislative, policy and administrative measures, at the provincial level, in consultation and cooperation with indigenous peoples, to achieve the ends of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and to follow up on its effectiveness.
As we look to the future, we will continue to work towards proceeding as an organized, prosperous and self-reliant nation. We raise our hands to the ancestors, Elders and community members who guide us, and all those who work in support of the continued success of our Nation.
